:waveHi everybody, this is my first post in this forum.
I want to pose a question that intrigued me since the first day I study Palmistry (for 3 years or so).
In this forum, all competent palmists share a universal approval that the dominant hand should be the right hand to read. Also, many books I have read said the same thing. But I have read another book in my country that in order to judge what hand to read, we should weave our 10 fingers together and check what thumb is on the top. If the right hand's thumb is below the left hand's thumb, that means the person is left- brained, so that the dominant hand would be right hand, the proper one to read and vice versa.
I tried the same thing on me and found out that the left thumb is below the right thumb, so that I would be right- brained, and it was true. Consider that fact, I should read my left hand as my future.
Can you shed some opinions on this?
Because in my country, all the children are taught to be right- handed, so maybe I'm not naturally right-handed (my left foot is dominant over the right foot ).
I kind of worry about this because it is a huge difference between my left and right hand. The right hand has an island on the life line at the age of 20 or so, and doesn't have an Apollo line, which appears quite firmly on my left hand. In addition, the fate line in the right hand is intersected, the left hand's is not. In presence, i can not judge which hand is more accurate in my life's event, because now I'm only 18 and all the ups and downs are just before me. I would be a vast disaster if the island on the right hand's life line becomes true.
Two months ago, facing a career's fork, I went to a card reader. She also said if I chose one of the two ways, I would meet an accident. It accorded to my right hand. But in fact, I chose the other alternative and went abroad just now.
So i just want to ask if anyone has experienced the event accuracy in your life on right and left hand and tell me something about it? Because I really worry if I can dodge the island on my 20s...
Thanks a lot

Hi Dulcet!
I've heard of the exercise where you weave two hands and see which thumb comes out on top. From what I've heard, it shows which hand really is dominant.
I myself am left handed so when I try that exercise, my left thumb comes out on top.
But in my sister's case, when she was young, she showed a preference for her left hand, but my parents got her to switch to using mostly her right hand.
Even though she uses her right hand to write, eat, etc, when she tries that exercise, her left thumb comes out on top.

I hope this helped!

Hello Dulcet,

First of all, I can understand your worries, for this is indeed  a topic which has created quite a lot of confussion in the past - including this forum, and including many palmistry books.

Second, I would like to correct you on 1 single aspect of your writing:

"But I have read another book in my country that in order to judge what hand to read, we should weave our 10 fingers together and check what thumb is on the top. If the right hand's thumb is below the left hand's thumb, that means the person is left- brained, so that the dominant hand would be right hand, the proper one to read and vice versa."

I am sorry to say, but this is not true! (does your book really say that after weaving your fingers: when the LEFT THUMB is on top, this indicates RIGHT HANDEDNESS ...???)

In Academic Psychology the weaving of the hands is only a superficial tool to determine handedness. But the correct information is: if your RIGHT HAND is on top, this indicates RIGHT HANDEDNESS (+ LEFT BRAIN hemisphere dominance).

Dulcet, this implicates regarding your hands:

"I tried the same thing on me and found out that the left thumb is below the right thumb"

... this implicates that you have right hand dominance, and if you were not forced to write with your right hand, I think it would be safe to conclude that  you are right-handed.

By the way, you should not related foot-dominance directly to hand-dominance. Since research has indicated that usually about 5 to 10% of people have LEFT HAND DOMINANCE. However, in foot dominance, ear dominance, and eye dominance ... the percentages are much higher than 10%.

A few years ago I did some research on this myself. Right now, I can not give you the exact percentages ... but I remember that regarding footedness the percentages were close 20%.

By the way, I am left handed ... but I definitely have right-footness (I play football with my right foot) - though my left leg is about 12mm longer than my right leg .

:laugh )

Anyway, this source presents some illustrative percentages:

http://www.pierce.ctc.edu/tlink/general/projects/creativity/handedness.html

According to Coren (1993):
"In a study that tested 5,147 people for sidedness, we found that 88 percent of the people were right-handed and 81 percent were right-footed. This means that although humans have a right-sided bias for their foot use, the tendency is not quite as strong as it is for handedness. It is also the case that a right-hander exhibits a strong tendency to be right-footed as well. Of our group, 84 percent had their dominant hand and dominant foot on the same side." (p. 29)
...

"Like handedness, eyedness is mostly a right-sided matter in human beings. Our survey showed that 71 percent of the population is right-eyed. Also, 74 percent of human beings have their dominant hand and their dominant eye on the same side...." (p. 30) The idea that eyedness is important for the direction of spin is supported by the following observation: "Judgements of direction are also affected by eyedness. When asked to locate a position in space that they think is 'straight ahead' of them, people tend to pick a position shifted toward the side of their dominant eye. The visual system seems to interpret 'straight ahead' to mean 'straight ahead of your dominant eye'." (p. 31)

Dulcet, surely I have not answered all your questions ... but I hope that my first thoughts will guide you to make a SOLID re-start on this topic!

Best wishes from The Netherlands!!!

Martijn :)

Dulcet,

By the way, this feedback from Jsummerfield (:thanx) confirms that you were mis-informed by your book (or you got REALLY confused!)

I hope you understand!

Actually after reading the book I asked everyone around me, all of them are right- handed, they put the left thumb on top, just opposite of me.
I explained to myself that most people are left- brained so that they put the left thumb on top.
But I won't bother with this which- thumb- on- top anymore. Too complicated already. If my right hand is dominant, then I am waiting  for the life line's island :cool

I just want to ask if there's any PERSONAL experience on the right and left hand things. Did your life flow along with the dominant hand's signs?

Hahaha ...

(I am glad to see that your state of mind has transformed from:

 :pullhairinto :cool )

Dulcet, that could be a very wise decision ... for you've started a discussion about a VERY complex matter indeed!

:thumbsup

PS. By the way, to provide you some personal experience:

As a 'lefty' ... I prefer to take more notice of my right hand - possibly because I prefer to play football with my right foot, and many years ago I also was able to learn to play the guitar ... with my right hand (actually, with both hands of course).

Dulet I think both hands are important and have a very different take on the purposes of the left and right hands, which may help relieve some of your worries.

In the hand analysis system I use, the right hand is how you present yourself to the outer world (since you shake hands with your right hand) so the markings on your right hand is how people understand you when they first meet you.

The left hand is how you relate with people who are close to you - friend, family, close work relationships - and if your hands are different, you may present different aspects of yourself in different environments.

Dulcet, I actually see this very differently. I see the left hand as how you represent yourself wth people who know you well. Your right hand is how present yourself with people you just meet or only know a little bit.

If your hands are different a lot from left to right, then people who know you well may know different things about you than people whom you just meet.

Hi Pamelah,

Yes, I agree: looking at both hands should always be THE way to acquire info from the hand.

What are your thoughts regarding LEFT-HANDEDNESS in this matter? Does it change anything in your approach of the hands?

not in regards to "meeting the outer world" because we always shake hands with our right hand, that is what we present first. And "more personal sides" are still what shows up later. I see this so often with heart line types being different left to right and 'dominant handedness' doesn't matter at all with this aspect of relationship. If somebody has a Big Heart on the right hand and Hermit on the left (common enough) then the Hermit isn't apparent right away but does show up as the person becomes more well known by another. And it's shocking to the new person in somebody's life.

I don't think about dominant handedness usually but maybe i'll pay more attention to it and get back to you. There are so many other things in the hand that call me first.

My daughter is left handed and rest of the family is right handed, so she did not have other choice as to learn how to shake hands with her right hand, however I noticed, some left handed children are handing their left hand first, and then being corrected by others.

Just recently my daughter played tennis with left handed partner and they shook hands with their left hands after the match. Does that means that their right hands are representing more personal side?

Thanks

I wouldn't actually say that because I really haven't studied this aspect of hands. I'm so focused on lines, hand shape, fingerprints, Gift Markings and other things that handedness is so low on my list I haven't researched it. Maybe there is somebody else who has done this. For many of the markings, it really doesn't matter which hand it is on (Gift Markings, for example) and for some it's a big deal (heart lines, fingerprints) but why wouldn't handedness come into play? Everything else does it's just not my area of experience.

When I was growing up, I dont know if I was lefthanded or not - but I was coerced to use my right hand for writing. Today, I write with my right hand but if I have to play golf or cricket I would do so left handedly because I am comfortable that ways.

Do you think its something to do with the left/right brain controlling your voluntary movements like shaking hands with right hands and involuntary movements like catching the ball with the left hand or eating with left hand?

I pretty much feel its something to do with the primary brain functions that control our hand movements.
