All Words

The art and practice of telling someone's fortune by reading the lines on the palm of their hand.  Also called chiromancy

Wilkipedia

Chiromancy or cheiromancy, (Greek cheir, “hand”; manteia, “divination”), is the art of characterization and foretelling the future through the study of the palm, also known as palmistry, palm-reading, or hand analysis. The practice is found all over the world, with numerous cultural variations.

Modern palmistry can trace its roots back to gypsy fortune tellers, and Indian mystics, but often modern palmists combine traditional predictive techniques with psychology, holistic healing, and alternative methods of divination. .

The practice of chiromancy is regarded by many as a pseudoscience, and no hard scientific evidence has been found to back up claims of veracity. It should be noted that the information outlined below is representative of modern palmistry; there are many - often conflicting - interpretations of various lines and palmar features across various "schools" of palmistry. None of these interpretations have been verified by any objective scientific research.

Wow Sue!  I just read all these definitions!  Is it my imagination or are they skeptical, negative and archaic?   At the very least they feed the misconception people have about palmistry!  I vote that we lobby to have all the dictionaries rephrase their definitions!!   We can start a worldwide petition!!   And none of them should be able to say anything about fortune telling or "claiming" anything.  Just that word alone makes it evident the writer has never had a good palm reading!   I almost thought Wikipedia was going to be different, then they kind of dropped the ball on the scientific study comment.  People have studied hands for eons!  Of course there are going to be differences in practice depending on where we study!  It's just like medicine, there are various schools of thought involved in treating a certain illness, that doesn't mean they are unproven or not authentic.

Ooh, Sue I think I got my dander up!  :pullhair  Do you find any of these definitions offensive or untruthful?z

I would like to know if anyone has come across a definition of hand analysis or palmistry that they find accurate.  I'm too distressed to think of one now.  I'm going to go smooth my dander now.

Karla
