Leonid Ivanovyc Stadnyk from Ukraïne is the world's tallest living man according to Guinness World Records 2008.

Leonid has the biggest palm in the world as well – his palm is 31 centimeters long. Probably for this reason he does not drink alcohol: any glass looks tiny to him.

However, before his operation 24 year old macrodactyly patient Liu Hua from Jiangsu (China) is the man who used to have the world's largest human hand ... ever!

Hi Den,

Actually .... Leonid Stadnik is a certified verterinarian and veterinary surgeon.

Den,

I just found a lovely Youtube video about Leonid, including the song:

"You give your hand to me"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXvyWdHY3RI

(and Den ... now I hope you'll never be afraid to meet this guy)

PS. This is Leonid with his phone:

^^^Thats a great photo!

I wish there was a pic of his palms though!

I remember seeing another giant hand on on Ripleys Believe It or Not a few years ago, I googled and found a pic

http://www.angelfire.com/mn/nn/gianthand.jpg

GIANT HAND
Tomas Gomez's right hand has grown to five times its natural size and weighs 20 lbs. Tomas lives in a remote village in Nicaragua and is completely self-sufficient, not letting his unusual hand hinder him in any way.

:thumbsup

Thank you LucyBlue,

The hand of Tomas Gomez for sure does look like the other hand mentioned in the article: Liu Hua's hand - from Jiangsu (China), weighing over 10 POUNDS!!!:

By the way, the best thing I have found, is the following 'print' of Leonid Stadnik's palm:

:coolLooked like the one guy had his hand inside a turkey at first glance.

Our friend Leonid appears to have air hands. He looks like a gentle soul.

Oh Den you crack me up :titter  I agree that Leonid looks like a gentle soul.

Thanks Lucyblue, it also reminded me of the pic Martijn had previously posted. Despite me laughing at Den's joke....Isn't it an awful condition. If these guys lived in the western world, do you think their condition would have been treated and their hands never got to that size?

Not sure if I mentioned I read recently for a lady who said she had gigantism when young. She had huge hands with some unusual features, and big face / bones, but not to the extent of someone like Leonid. Sadly I didn't have my printing equipment with me.

:thoughtful ... hmm, some people on the internet seem to question the accuracy of the measurments on Mr. Stadnyk, which were made by the Ukrainian representatives of the World Guiness Book of records.

Anyway, no obvious reason to question the size of his hands:

Despite their bulk, I almost feel there is delicate nature to these hands; I see those supple thumbs as a refining quality with a giving nature for such an enormous giant.

:coolI have always found that those with supple thumbs more willing to converse with at the airport than our straight thumbed friends. I know this from being on the road most of this year.

Any comments or observations with the bent thumbs from the rest of you?

Regards,

Den

Hi there,

I agree the bent thumb theory, I have two. But my grandmother's are so bent they look deformed. I wish I had a photo of hers. Maybe I'll try before she passes on (now 94).

I have also found that the bent thumb people are generous, and giving but unfortunately spend money too easily and thus often struggle with finances...

:coolI have those type of thumbs myself, I spend freely, but rarely on myself (my wife has straight thumbs, go figure huh)

I met a very wealthy man at lunch a few weeks ago (my co-worker golfs with him), and I admired his warm heartedness, and he had extremely supple joints in his large thumbs. He was so natural at creating relationships and of course bought us a round of drinks before going to see his race horses. I think it is a very elegant and telling characteristic.

Hello Saage,

I love your thumb-photo!

:thumbsup

Hi Den,

Yes, I go along with your thumb theory + observation. For confirmation, here is a description of Leonid's character:

"Overcoming the setbacks is what has made Leonid so loved by people all over the globe. His strength of character, determination and gentle demeanor is what stands out when he is seen - more so than his towering heights."

Taken from: http://www.worldstallestperson.com/category/leonid-stadnik/

By the way, Leonid's hands are also really very large compared to the size of his head:

Hi Den,
From my observation some people with banded thumbs are not that converse with strangers, however they are very close with their friends.

I do agree with Saage that they spend money freely and are generous, however mostly for family.

It is fanny, my husband has both thumbs very banded and I have straight thumbs, I guess that creates good balance in relationship.

World's Largest Living Hand Cops A Feel

Thanks to a brain surgery F-up that super-charged his pituitary gland, Leonid Stadnyk began to grow and grow until, one morning, he became THE WORLD'S TALLEST LIVING MAN. Which is all fine and good, according to Handresearch.com, but even more amazing (and relevant to hand researchers) -- Leonid Stadnyk possesses THE WORLD'S LARGEST LIVING HAND.

His palm is 31 cm. long. For this reason, as Handresearch.com cutely editorializes:
"He [probably] does not drink alcohol: any glass looks tiny to him!"

woohoo fame at last eh Martijn! :-)

I forgot to tell you, a while ago there was a very interesting TV programme about Leonid, I think it was in the series Extraordinary People and called The World’s Tallest Man. A doctor travelled to see him and, after some tests, told Leonid some very good news that he probably was not going to die at an early age, and Leonid was so happy and felt a new lease of life! Previously he was not interested to go in the Guiness Book of World Records, but in the programme he decided it might have some benefits for him after all. Leonid indeed seemed like a really nice guy.

Thanks for the additional info Lynn!

:thoughtful ... hmmm, this man appears to be a 'flip-flopper' - for recently he officially refused to be measured under the new Guinness guidelines:

August 23 , 2008 update:

Leonid Stadnyk refused to be measured under new guidelines

Guinness World Records has returned the title of world's tallest man to China's Bao Xishun after Ukrainian Leonid Stadnyk refused to be measured under new guidelines, Reuters reports.

Bao, who stands 7 feet, 8.95 inches, held the title for a year before losing it in 2006 to Stadnyk, who is 8-5½. Bao agreed to be measured by Guinness – six times in one day, standing and lying down – but Stadnyk refused, saying he didn't want to be bothered. Previously, a doctor's statement was enough to give the nod to Stadnyk.

Guinness added the measuring stipulation this year to tighten its requirements.

Leonid Stadnyk's left hand measured by his mother: approximately 31cm long!

NOVEMBER 7, 2008 update

November 7, 2008 update:

Leonid Stadnyk's mother measured her son's hand:

Ukrainian Olena Stadnyk (L) measures the hand of her son Leonid Stadnyk in the yard of their house in the Podolyantsi village in Ukraine's Zhytomyr region - about 200 km (124 miles) from the capital city Kiev. Leonid Stadnyk's hand measures 31 cm.
